The Neuropathology of Head Injury

چکیده
Acute head injury Epidemiology In the United Kingdom more than 150,000 patients are admitted to hospital each year with an acute head injury. Of this group more than 80% are classified as having a mild head injury, as defined by the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). Approximately 1-2% of patients admitted to hospital after traumatic brain injury die as a consequence of their injuries with the majority of fatalities being within the severe head injury group. In the acute phase the neuropathology of blunt force head injury can be divided into two principal categories: 1) focal; and 2) diffuse (see table).

Neuropathology of inflicted head injury in children. II. Microscopic brain injury in infants.
There are very few reports in the literature dealing with the neuropathology of infant head injury, and the question of whether diffuse traumatic brain damage [diffuse axonal injury (DAI)] occurs in such children has not yet been reliably established by detailed neuropathological studies. We report the findings in the brains of a series of 37 infants aged 9 months or less, all of whom died from...
متن کاملEpidemiologic study of fall-related head injury in Iran and its comparison with other countries: review article
Head injury is one of the most important types of injury and is responsible for most of the deaths due to trauma. Low-income and middle-income countries face with more risk factors, but they still lack adequate health-care capacity to deal with complications. Trauma literally means the damage and injury, and head injury was defined as physical damage to the brain or skull caused by external for...
متن کاملRepeated traumatic brain injury affects composite cognitive function in piglets.
Cumulative effects of repetitive mild head injury in the pediatric population are unknown. We have developed a cognitive composite dysfunction score that correlates white matter injury severity in neonatal piglets with neurobehavioral assessments of executive function, memory, learning, and problem solving. Anesthetized 3- to 5-day-old piglets were subjected to single (n = 7), double one day ap...
متن کاملRelating in Vivo Pathophysiology to Neuropathology after Human Head Injury
The meticulous clinico-pathological studies undertaken by the Glasgow School of Neuropathology have indicated that various processes may prove lethal or be associated with severe disability and yet it has been difficult to define those processes in life. Examples include cerebral ischaemia, cholinergic dysfunction and the different patterns of neuropathological damage associated with the vegeta...

905 Dear Editor: We read with great interest the careful study by Dr. Reichard and his colleagues (Reichard RR, White CL, Hladik CL, Dolinak D. Beta-amyloid precursor protein staining of nonaccidental central nervous system injury in pediatric autopsies. J. Neurotrauma 2003;20: 347–355). The paper provides some valuable information about the neuropathology of fatal infant head injury. It confir...
